Description

As a pianist and primary songwriter in the band Red Earth & Rust, Jacques Coetzee brought his classically trained vocals and ability as a poet to deftly craft the songs his band performed. In 2002 Jacques’ collection of poems called “Singing Through” (based partly on his experiences as a singer) formed the body of work for his M.A. degree in Creative Writing from the University of Cape Town.

His classical training can be heard in the rich sounds and musical architecture of his songs. He has tutored students in English literature at the universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch and has also been a musical busker holding audiences at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

He is a published poet – The Love Sheet, a conversation of love poems between him and Fairhead, was published in 2017. His first solo volume of Poems, An Illuminated Darkness, was published in 2020. His influences include poets and singer-songwriters, the Delta blues, and gospel from the American south. He and Barbara Fairhead have released four albums of original songs under the name Red Earth & Rust: Look For Me (2008), Dark Mercy/Wrestling the Angel (2010), Skeletons of Memory: Songs for the West Coast (2012), and The Mercy of Wild Things (2015), the last two produced by Jonny Blundell of Rootspring. These Narrow Songs is the first for which Coetzee has written the lyrics and the music.
